Meet The Enablers - Cpl. David Addison

(Part 1 of a Series)
.
..
Cpl. David Addison on, Why mass DNA testing is more convenient than irregular lineups:
  • "We are not going to bypass them because of a small inconvenience," said Cpl. David Addison of the Durham Police Department"You are looking at one victim brutally raped. If that was someone else's daughter, child, I don't think 46 (tests) would be a large enough number to figure out exactly who did it," Addison said. WRAL March 24, 2006
On Bob Ashley's many calls:
  • ."Although we have received many calls expressing concerns and anger about this incident, we have not received any calls which will allow us to assist in resolving this case," said Durham CrimeStoppers Coordinator Cpl. David Addison in a news release issued Tuesday. "We are extending our plea for information and help to our Duke family, who are also part of our community." Addison said that anyone with information about the case could anonymously contact Durham CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200 or send him e-mail. Durham CrimeStoppers will pay cash for any information that leads to an arrest in this case. WRAL March 28, 2006

On the accuser’s changing her story every few minutes:

  • In an April 3 news release offering cash rewards for information, CrimeStoppers coordinator Cpl. David Addison wrote, "The victim was sodomized, raped, assaulted and robbed. This horrific crime sent shock waves throughout our community."
  • Tuesday at 11:16 a.m., Addison e-mailed the same release, but modified the first sentence to read: "The victim alleges that she was sodomized, raped, assaulted and robbed." The second sentence calling the incident a "horrific crime" was deleted.
  • Eighteen minutes later, an amended CrimeStoppers release was sent. The only change was that "the victim" was now referred to as "the complainant." John in Carolina June 25, 2006.
On Gottlieb Hunting Dukies:
  • "Our general order, it basically gives the officer room to use his or her own judgment," said Cpl. David Addison, a police spokesman. News & Observer

On really, really strong evidence:

  • On March 24, the Durham Herald-Sun reported Durham Police spokesman Cpl. David Addison as saying investigators had “’really, really strong physical evidence’ from the crime scene (610 N. Buchanan Blvd where the party was held and the bathroom the alleged victim said the rape and beaten took place in) that police will be able to compare with DNA results.” Cash Michaels

On relentless hoaxing:

  • "We're asking someone from the lacrosse team to step forward," Durham police Cpl. David Addison said. "We will be relentless in finding out who committed this crime." He emphasized the seriousness of the accusations -- first-degree rape, kidnapping, assault by strangulation and robbery. News & Observer

On Ruth Sheehan:

  • "We're not saying that all 46 were involved," Durham Police Cpl. David Addison said recently. "But we do know that some of the players inside that house on that evening knew what transpired and we need them to come forward." ABC News

On Alex Charns lawsuit:

  • Durham CrimeStoppers is now asking for the public's assistance in the investigation. "Although we have received many calls expressing concerns and anger about this incident, we have not received any calls which will allow us to assist in resolving this case," said Durham CrimeStoppers Coordinator Cpl. WRAL

On lack of DNA and physical trauma:

  • “That brutal assault, that brutal rape that occurred within that house, cannot be explained by anyone,” Addison said ABC News

.

Please note: LieStoppers has added the headings to introduce the quotes presented. While the headings are intended to satirize the post, Cpl. Addison's words have not been bent, folded, spindled, or mutilated. Those outrageous public statements are his own and may be better understood in the context of the articles referenced while the combination of the headings and the quotes are perhaps better viewed in the context of the drama as a whole. We apologize for any confusion this may have created.

Thanks for putting a face on Addison. He did start the Hoax out in the Press. In his March 24 Video appearance on WRAL he was the first police official to yell fire! No wonder the Community got upset, he was in charge of Crimestoppers

Addison is hoist on his own petard, all right. Your topic titles are quite apt and funny, as usual.
I look forward to Alex Charns' lawsuit against Crimestoppers.

Well, Ashley's getting razzed all over the blogs today. I for one don't mind ANY joke at his expense.

But poor Ruthie? NO! She's repented.

Do a serious piece on Addison, guys. There's a lot to tell about that vigilante poster.

Can't wait for you to have fun with the next one!

This is very clever and amusing. I bet even Addison didn't realize he could be so witty.

Thanks so much for posting Addison's actual words. He bears significant responsibility for inciting the community hysteria early on.

Just as in your ealier piece w/ Gottlieb and Nifong -- using their own words is great! Its quite amazing to look back at the words of so many back in March/Apri... innocent until proven guilty??
