Edwards Hires Hoax Apologist to Run Campaign Blog

Presidential candidate John Edwards, former law partner of Wade Smith, has hired Amanda Marcotte of Pandagon as his campaign blogmaster.

Blogger News Network reports:

“Left-wing blogger Amanda Marcotte of the vociferously anti-war web site Pandagon has been named by the John Edwards campaign as their new blogmaster.

“The extent of Ms. Marcotte’s responsibilities at the Edwards site, and the nature of the political operations she will be undertaking as a member of the Edwards campaign, have not yet been detailed publicly.”

In her first post at Edward’s blog, Marcotte describes the decision to sign on with the Edwards campaign noting that the candidate shared her political obsessions.
"This is both my first post to the Edwards blog and my announcement that I'm joining the presidential campaign for John Edwards for 2008. I'll be taking over the job of Blogmaster (mistress?) over the course of the month of February.

"The main two questions this brings up are: Why me? And why John Edwards?

"As for me, I run and write for a blog called Pandagon, which is one of the top liberal political blogs on the internet and known mostly for insightful and often humorous political blogging. We pride ourselves on being an issues-oriented blog, instead of a blog that mimics the "horse race" coverage of politics that dominates so much of the mainstream media. Prior to my stint at Pandagon, I was the sole blogger at a blog called Mouse Words, which won the 2004 Koufax award for Best New Blog. My obsessions in politics include women's rights, ending the war in Iraq, environmentalism, and restoring the American dream where climbing out of poverty and having a middle class lifestyle is an option available to everyone.

"Why John Edwards? Well, look again at that list of political obsessions and you have your answer. John Edwards is the only Democrat in the field of potential nominees who is interested in pursuing the right policies in all these areas. Especially important to me is that he is interested in fighting poverty in America and putting that middle class dream in the hands of all Americans.

"This campaign also excited my interests, because we have the goal of making the most out of the untapped resource that is the internet. Already this blog has more interactivity and genuinely interesting and issues-oriented content than any other campaign site I've seen thus far, and with the new staff we're bringing together, we will be able to take it much further in that direction. Internet organizing is still in its infancy as far as I'm concerned and I expect that the presidential election of 2008 will be a major factor in taking internet political organizing to the next level. Of course I want to be a part of that!"
To date, Edwards’ silence on the Hoax has implied either a tacit acceptance of the conduct of disgraced District Attorney Mike Nifong, political cowardice, or indifference to injustice in his home state. His new blogmaster, however, has been anything but silent on the Hoax. As recently as last week, and despite mountains of proof to the contrary, Ms. Marcotte continued to claim, in graphic detail, that a sexual assault had occurred and went so far as to add, “We have conclusive evidence that happened.”
“Naturally, my flight out of Atlanta has been delayed. Let’s hope it takes off when they say it will so I don’t miss my connecting flight home.

“In the meantime, I’ve been sort of casually listening to CNN blaring throughout the waiting area and good fucking god is that channel pure evil. For awhile, I had to listen to how the poor dear lacrosse players at Duke are being persecuted just because they held someone down and fucked her against her will—not rape, of course, because the charges have been thrown out.

"Can’t a few white boys sexually assault a black woman anymore without people getting all wound up about it?
"So unfair.”

"Yes, how dare a rape victim act confused and bewildered like she was raped or something."

"Natalia, do you know the details of the case? If so, why do you think a women enthusiastically jumped into a sexual situation with men making slavery jokes at her? Furthermore, what is your theory on why she supposedly looooooved having sex with guys holding her facedown on the bathroom floor? There’s no “if” they behaved in a disrespectful manner. We have conclusive evidence that happened."

"This is about race and class and gender in every way, and there’s basically no way this woman was going to see justice. In her part of the country, both women and black people are seen as subhuman objects to be used and abused by white men."
"Yeah, I know, Alon. Which is why I’m frustrated that people are pretending “can’t identify which one raped her” somehow equals “wasn’t raped”. I had some initial confusion about exactly who was assaulting me when I was assaulted, but that doesn’t mean that his hands weren’t actually where they were."

"Plus, the media is acting like these men are exonerated!"
Earlier comments by Ms. Marcotte on the Hoax give additional clues to the political obsessions she finds common ground with candidate Edwards.

"At bare minimum, the Duke lacrosse team felt entitled to humiliate the strippers they hired because they were women and they were even paid for. At worst, they felt entitled to gang rape a woman for those reasons." Pandagon 4/19

"The focus on intent is what allows people to reinforce racist structures while denying that they’re doing that. Exhibit #1: LaShawn Barber has an op-ed today where she compares the members of the Duke lacrosse team that are accused of rape to the Scottsboro Boys. The cases don’t have much in common in any social sense. First of all, the Scottsboro Boys were accused in an atmosphere where lynchings were incredibly common in the South, whereas the Duke students are being accused where they are some of the most privileged in society. Second, the Scottsboro defendents had barely any defense at all, especially compared to the first class lawyers the Duke students can hire. The alleged victims in the Scottsboro case didn’t really explain themselves or the charges, and one never testified at all (presumably because she inconveniently refused to play along and pretend she was raped). I could go on, but you get the idea of why Barber’s comparison of the two cases is ridiculous.

"But because the concept of racism has been reduced to intention instead of a systematic societal problem, people like Barber can get away with equating people who are loaded with privilege with victims of a racist system like the Scottsboro Boys. And that’s why it’s so damn frustrating when white liberals insist on making racism about someone’s intentions instead of the effects of their actions." Pandagon 6/23

"There’s just something about this Duke rape case that’s inspiring to rape apologists. The sheer amount of energy that’s going into rape apologies lately, not just for the Duke lacrosse team but in general, is breathtaking. Kathleen Parker has been writing about almost nothing else, but instead building a long case that unless the victim is 9 years old and a virgin and white and blonde and her attacker kills her and he mutiliates her body, then rape isn’t so much a crime as a feminist plot to put all men in jail so that we can, I don’t know, wear sweatpants more or something. If this was indeed our plot, we are some dumb motherfuckers, considering less than 16% of rapes result in charges and less than half of those result in any kind of punishment. We could certainly come up with a more efficient method if we wanted to of getting men in jail besides getting ourselves raped and then raising a fuss as if we had a right not to be raped." Pandagon 5/10

"I’m so glad I started an “Assholes”–epistemology sent me David Brooks’ column today about the Duke rape case and it’s unbelievably evil. Bobo, who writes books that are basically arguments that morality stems from identity, has the nerve today to deny the importance of racial and class issues in the Duke rape case. "

"If you wander through the thicket of commentary that already surrounds the Duke lacrosse scandal, the first thing you notice is how sociological it is. In almost every article and piece of commentary, the event is portrayed not as a crime between individuals but as a clash between classes, races and sexes."

"That might be because the rapists were making jokes about slavery and picking cotton to the victim, which is to say reminding her of their racial privilege by referencing the history that created it. But to Bobo, who thinks that middle Americans are morally superior by virtue of where they live and where they shop, has all of a sudden decided that identity politics should have no bearing on moral discussions." Pandagon 4/09

"Smarty-pants, educated womenz (and one dude who loved the cock) who have sex
with guys who aren’t me raped that stripper at Duke, not a bunch of overly entitled rich white boys making cracks about picking cotton." Pandagon 8/31

Given Edwards' refusal to speak out against the misconduct of Defendant Nifong and the injustice of the Hoax, it is difficult to imagine that the comments of his new blogmaster, will not be taken as a reflection of his view of the Hoax.

The last quotation you used was a satirical comment by a pro-defendant poster who admitted to being a "troll." You weaken your otherwise spot-on post by leaving that bit in.

John Edwards must not be serious about becoming President. If he were, he would not associate his campaign with such a foul-mouthed female.

Has the man not read her profanity-filled blog?

Amanda - You are disgusting - both in through and words. You should have your mouth washed out with soap. I don't like John Edwards and am glad he hired this person. She may be a lot of things, but a classy lady is not one of them. Where is lawyer Antoun when we need a laugh.

Anonymous said...

Reading Amanda's comments of January 21, 2007 leave me breathless and on the edge of despair. Is everything political? Are there no absolutes? Can any educated person seriously hold this view at this late a date? And how could a serious Presidential candidate hire someone so foul mouthed and obtuse?

This woman is justa s psychotic as Wendy Murphy. They should become lovers.

I don't think she's a nut. I think she's liberal and more liberals than people want to believe have formed this racist opinion of white men.

Some of it is probably self-loathing, but it is very real and you can hear it on TV, Radio, and read it on the internet. It's taught at every University, so maybe we shouldn't be surprised.

Some are in denial, especially liberals drawn to defend the Duke players because of their affiliation with Duke, but it's there and it's very real. Of course, we can't codemn every liberal - or all of any one group.

But go down the list of names that wanted the boy's heads, go down the list of media that prejudged them and spoke of Duke Lacrosse players as one monolithic group. You'll find a mix of people - some reactionary defenders of African Americans and the other group is the liberals. The professors, the media, and the liberals across the country - in General.

Sad, but true.

What a tight knit little group the NC Democrats are. Edwards certainly does not want to upset the African American constituency by supporting justice in this case, and I guess he views the Duke 3 as not being part of the NC Democratic constituency, so he won't stick his neck out for them. So few elected officials in NC have spoken up about Nifong's outrageous prosecution, er...persecution!

I didn't like him in the last election, and would never vote for him in the next. With this woman helping he isn't looking smart at all!

Anonymous said...

"In her part of the country, both women and black people are seen as subhuman objects to be used and abused by white men.

She doesn't think very highly of Edwards' home state, and automatically inlcudes HIM in this characterization. Not a very good start to making Edwards' look like a viable candidate, especially since he's just one of those "nifongian" lawyers from corrupt-to-the-core North Carolina!

My guess is that she won't be his blogmaster much longer. I trust he is now learning about her foul-mouthed, racist, who-cares-about-the-facts worldview. If not, he soon will, when Rush, Sean, and then the MSM get ahold of this.

LS - have you saved the blog posts as proof, before they go "poof?"

When law firms split up, it's often not an amicable process. Does anyone know the history of why John Edwards left the Wade Smith firm?

Anonymous said...

In reading this, remember that John Edwards is the "star" of the North Carolina Democratic Party. Thus, if this woman is an important voice of Edwards' campaign, then it is obvious that his campaign still is officially promoting not only the hoax, but still is trying to convice people that Reade, Collin, and David actually raped Crystal.

This is very significant, I believe, because ALL of the relevant people making decisions in this case are NC Democrats. If the Edwards campaign, the main Democratic entity in the state, is still actively promoting the hoax, then the Democrats of North Carolina still are actively promoting it.

By the way, these are white Democrats, not black ones. I can only hope that the attorneys are able to deal with this new development. If the view that these three young men actually did rape and assult Crystal is the official position of the NC Democratic Party -- as it is the official position of the Edwards campaign -- then there still is much work to do.

What Edwards has done is despicable, and I am going to do everything I can to expose him to the larger audience. These charges are transparantly false, but John Edwards apparently is taking the position that the government must throw these three young men into prison because it is good politics.

(Disclaimer: I am a registered Libertarian and do not support the Republican nor the Democratic parties.)

Isn't it odd that she's moving to Chapel Hill and going to work for a North Carolinian?

Marcotte's response to the outrage caused by her attack on the Dukies:

You know what I miss?

Published by Amanda Marcotte February 2nd, 2007

"All the harassing comments and emails I got when I suggested the O.J. Simpson’s wealth, social status as an athlete, and male privilege might have made it possible for him to get away with murdering his ex-wife.

"Kidding! Simpson is black and Nicole Brown Simpson was white, so that never happened. I’ve never received one email or one comment suggesting that I’m out of line thinking he is anything but a role model for morality. And that’s all I’m going to say on the subject of why if I see the words “Duke” or “lacrosse” in an email that has the whiff of accusatory tone, I’m deleting it and simply not going to reply to it. Those comments will also be deleted from this thread, though you are free to explain why you think the State of California was overzealous to prosecute Simpson."

Her rantings should be published and broadcast all over the state of NC. Let's see how the (dis)honorable John Edwards deal with it then!

Edwards is a train that won't even get out of the station in the '08 presidential campaign. He's not a women and he's not a black, so at best he starts out in 3rd place behind Clinton and Obama. Look for him not to be a factor by the time Iowa is on center stage.

Amanda's comments about the Duke LAX case, especially the recent ones given all the information that has come out about Nifong's prosecutorial misconduct, show her to be driven by her agenda, not logic.

It's kinda hard to tell -- did Amanda sign up to blog for a loser or did Edwards hire a loser to blog for him? How about both?

Prediction:

In January 2009, Edwards will not be hosting an inauguration party.

In January 2009, Amanda will still be posting her drivel on the internet, but no one except her fellow socialist travellers will be reading it.

Oh, OK, so please go tell KC Johnson over at DIW, a liberal if there ever was one, that every nasty, racist post that has been posted on his blog are his default position. The silliness of your argument is silly on its face. This is the position of one woman. She in no way speaks for me or any other individual.

Now if Edwards thinks she's a valuable asset to his campaign after reading her drivel, he'll have to answer for it, but it in no way states his position on anything.

Stop with the hyperbole and return your focus to the fact the lax boys have and continue to be railroaded.

I happen to know Amanda from an earlier time as she graudated in the high school class with my son and was the girl-friend of his best friend. She had an incredibly snotty and arrogant attitude towards her fellow classmates, including my son, whom she felt to be ignorant and naive West Texas rubes.

At the high school senior prom, she dressed as one of the travestites from the Rocky HoOrror Picture show. No one understood what her outfit was because one one had ever seen the movie. (I had, but was only a chaperone there, not a student, and therefore did not comment.) She was outraged that her costume did not cause a stir. She loudly announced slowly for everyone to be enlightened as as though she was talking to kindergarteners where the costume came from and how important the movie was culturally. When the students did not react with shock, awe and wonder, but with continued cluelessness, she basicailly went into a sulk for the rest of the prom.

Half of the graduating class was Hispanic and generally poor and the large majority of Anglos there also came from families having incomes well below the national average. You cannot tell me that she identifies with the "common man." She is a cultural snob with the politically correct attitudes of the far left who identifies with the "cool" culture.

"Now if Edwards thinks she's a valuable asset to his campaign after reading her drivel, he'll have to answer for it, but it in no way states his position on anything."

Tell me, if another politician were to hire a blogger who made comments that were racist or sexist, would you be so quick to disassociate that candidate? When people become an official part of someone's campaign, and especially play an out-front role as Marcotte is doing, their views are associated with those of the candidate.

The media does this to candidates all the time, Democrat and Republican. Does John Edwards really believe that the three young men are rapists? I have no idea, given that the only public statements coming from his campaign are Marcotte's.

I do know that the attorneys on the case have tried to communicate the truth to him, but Edwards has said nothing. Face it, his campaign is based upon class and racial resentments. He is perhaps the most divisive candidate in this entire campaign -- and that says a lot.

So, until he publicly challenged his official blogmaster, I have no choice but to assume that Amanda Marcotte's statements are the official Edwards campaign statements. You may not like that, but that is how it works in politics.
