James P. Cooney III voted top Criminal-Defense Attorney in North Carolina

Jim Cooney, one of attorneys who represented Reade Seligmann, has been voted by his peers as the top criminal-defense attorney in North Carolina. Business North Carolina Magazine conducted its yearly poll of 18,500 North Carolina attorneys and the results were released on the Carolina News Wire.

“Behind the players’ victory were three lawyers, Joseph Cheshire V and Wade Smith of Raleigh and James P. Cooney III of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice PLLC in Charlotte. All three have been the leading vote-getters in the criminal-defense category of the North Carolina Legal Elite, the magazine’s annual listing of the state’s top lawyers, also published in January. Cooney is this year’s winner, while Cheshire won last year, and Smith won the year before. The list is compiled by sending ballots to more than 18,500 lawyers registered with the North Carolina Bar to practice in the state. Each votes for the top practitioner in 14 fields..” Carolina News Wire

There was also a winner we recommend to the many defendants in the two civil lawsuits filed against those that enabled the Duke Lacrosse Hoax/Frame.

Brad Bannon's day is coming.

Congratulations-- although it helps to have three clients who are so obviously innocent!

I would have loved to have nominated Kirk Osborne. But the other 3 are as awesome as he always was.

And yes, it's only a matter of time before Brad's name graces that list.

I'm pleased about this honor for Jim Cooney and agree about Kirk Osborne and Brad Bannon.

Jim is a star. Always wondered why those posters at LS questioned his lawyering? Have he and Brad posted since then?

I too agree with the above, especially the sentiment re. Cooney and Bannon.

There is so much more to come out of Durham than the LAX case. The entire legal system is broken, the cops are thugs and worse than you can imagine. Countless elected officials from the Governor, down to the City Manager, to the County Clerk are involved. Many fingers have dipped into Durham's cookie jar, and the truth will be extremely explosive to many who have turned their backs on citizens, justice, and any code of ethics or valor. Embrace yourselves for an extreme shock. A tidal wave of truth will boggle your mind, the corruption SHALL be exposed!

I have read the NC Business article and it is great! 7 pages, a full page picture of Cheshire and Bannon. Cooney and Smith pictured and a good synopsis of the frame/case. Bannon is named an under 40 top lawyer. They even had Nifong's mugshot.
