Passing his time writing poetry

The reviews keep coming in for the disbarred, disgraced, and former DA Nifong. The latest is Newsweek Magazine which gives us this update on Mike Nifong under the heading.

A Prosecutor Run Amok
In the mass-media age, major news stories captivate us for a moment and then vanish. We revisit those stories to bring you the next chapter.

Starting Point
In spring 2006, after an African American stripper claims she was gang-raped at a Duke lacrosse party, Durham (N.C.)County District Attorney Mike Nifong charges three white players with rape and kidnapping. He calls them "hooligans" and says he has "no doubt" that a crime occurred.

Fever Pitch

The case consumes the national media, winding up on NEWSWEEK'S cover—but then it falls apart: the victim recants, and the D.A. becomes an icon of prosecutorial abuse. All charges are dropped.

Present Day

Disbarred after 28 years of practice, Nifong, 57, still lives in the Durham area, passing his time writing poetry and performing as a soloist in his church choir, according to an ex-colleague who didn't want to be named discussing a friend. "All he ever wanted to be was a prosecutor," this person says. "It was part of his identity. What's he going to do now?" For a while, at least, he'll be facing the tide of lawsuits against him. Well, now, that was part of the problem, wasn't it? Nifong wanted to be the prosecutor. He didn't want to do the prosecutor's job, that of seeking justice -- that was too hard. But he wanted all the attention and rewards that went with being the prosecutor.

How in the world did Nifong let it get this far?

The first poster has it exactly right about Nifong. Nifong wanted to get the bigger pension. His story is sad and disgusting.

I missed the part about the victim recanting.

What can Nifong do... now that he can no longer be a prosecutor?

For starters... Nifong could do the RIGHT THING and voluntarily expose all aspects, including naming names, of the attempted framing of innocent people in Durham.

That might be the beginning of Nifong's road to redemption.

Well he will be spending a lot of time in court. Be careful what you wish for.

Nifong is a monster who can't be saved. Redemption isn't possible here, except through suicide.

Okay, the idea of Nifong writing poetry just sort of freaks me out, what kind of poetry could we expect from such a mind?

Nifong a good church going person. He just wanted to dragged a bunch of people through the mud so he could get a bigger pension. Is that so wrong?

But the lawsuits are starting and by now even his family knows the truth.

The lawsuits will help keeping from getting bored.

Brodhead and Nifong= Literary geniuses

Q. Does Brodhead sing?
A. Only to save his hide

Q. Does Nifong sing?
A. Only to save his hide.

Therefore, Brodhead and Nifong should sing and write poetry together. What a beautiful duet. They deserve each other.

Nifong should be writing his poetry in prison. That's where the scumbag belongs.

I really like the concept of a Nifong/Brodhead duet.

They deserve each other and I know neither one could stand the other.
