What Other's Are Saying

Ann Althouse:

“It's not just Durham. Women everywhere are hurt by this. After so much work, for decades, to overcome the entrenched belief that women lie about rape, this case is quickly reviving all the old suspicions. This is very, very harmful, far beyond the scope of Nifong's geographic domain.”
InkWell :
“Nonetheless, as the above snippets above show, the mainstream media from the beginning played the case as a referendum on slavery in the Old South and white male misogyny everywhere.”
“When news of this incident broke, Durham was in an uproar. The story line quickly became "white, privileged Duke athletes attack black single mother working to support her children and put herself through school." It turned into a political cause as much as a criminal case, and Nifong faced a test: Would he take on these symbols of society's power structure for the sake of the weak and oppressed? He zealously rose to the occasion. When the facts caught up with the hype, the story shifted. This is a prosecution based on a false accusation.”
Your Lying Eyes:
"So he is simply a bald-faced liar. There are few things more abhorrent in our society than a prosecutor who lies in order to gain a conviction. The state wields no greater power against the citizenry than its ability to put people in jail. In this case each of the accused faces decades in prison if convicted. Abuse of this power should be the #1 concern of the citizenry, not, say, whether high school football coaches should be saying prayers before a game, as the NY Times reports today. Terrible injustices happen all the time, of course, particularly with rape, but usually it's due to incompetence or laziness or basic flaws in our process (particularly for rape). But outright subterfuge is hopefully rare. This Nifong should be investigated by the State of NC immediately - he should be at a minimum disbarred if the facts in this article are verified. The rape case of course should be dismissed out-of-hand."
Allison Clarke:
“Mike Nifong is an asshat. I sincerely believe that there is not a single living soul left in Durham County who has confidence in the DA.”

asshat: A person, of either gender, whose behavior displays such ignorance/obnoxiousness that you would like to make them wear their own ass as a hat.

Usage: "Can you believe that my boss is making me stay until 9 pm on a Friday!?" "What an asshat."

asshat: A close cousin of the Ass-clown, typically identified by a jovial expression and an outward misunderstanding of how he/she is perceived, combined with a generally misguided conception of what is sociably acceptable amongst his/her fellow peers.

An asshat is a person whose only use for the upper half of their body (head included) is as a hat (mere decoration) for their ass - i.e. a Nifong.

Daniel Bowes, student head of the ACLU at Duke:

"As the initial facts concerning the case became clear, it was obvious to the ACLU @ DUKE's members that what D.A. Nifong was doing was unethical, inappropriate, and illegal."
