Time for a review of the whole incident by a blue ribbon commission of Duke Alumni. It is clear this fiasco included Duke profs who using their faculty position & their grad students to incite the campus community against these innocent young men.

How can we move forward unless we look backwards to discover the causes of this rush to judgement? What we know is that because of a handful of Duke Faculty the image of this Great University has been seriously harmed. It is time for a complete review.

Those who want to just "move forward" are forgetting an important reality.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

So, if their version of "move on" involves making the same mistakes over again, then they seem to be doing the right kind of "moving on". If they would rather not get themselves into this mess again, then they really need to figure out what went wrong, and how to prevent it from being able to happen again. Then they can safely "move on". Preventing something from recurring may well require preventing the people who did it from being able to do it again -- in other words, *CONSEQUENCES* may be necessary.

How do you make sure Nifong can't Nifong anyone again? Simple -- he's not a DA or lawyer anymore. How do you ensure that professors cannot attack their own students with impunity, in direct violation of their professional obligations? Well, you could look at Nifong's precedent...

Clearly, having a rule which says "don't do this" won't work, since there was already a rule. Thus, clearly the rule needs teeth.

A blue ribbon alumni committee to review the University's handling of the LAX incident is a great idea. How do we push the idea forward?
